JESUS chooses a Canaanite

 Mark 3:13

King James Version

13 And he goeth up into a mountain,

and calleth unto him whom he would:

and they came unto him.

Not all Canaanites are idolatrous.

JESUS chose a Canaanite to be His apostle.

Had SPIRIT not inspired me to create this blog, I'd not have known.

Had SPIRIT not made me search Scripture for the "exceptions", I'd not have been aware.

So I'm grateful for everything that SPIRIT teaches me each moment.

There is a Canaanite who represents an EXCEPTION to the usual idolatrous ones.

Here's what the Bible says:

Matthew 10:1-4

King James Version

10 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples,

he gave them power against unclean spirits,

to cast them out,

and to heal all manner of sickness

and all manner of disease.

2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these;

The first, Simon, who is called Peter,

and Andrew his brother;

James the son of Zebedee,

and John his brother;

3 Philip, and Bartholomew;

Thomas, and Matthew the publican;

James the son of Alphaeus,

and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

4 Simon the Canaanite*,

and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Mark 3:14-19

King James Version

14 And he ordained twelve,

that they should be with him,

and that he might send them forth to preach,

15 And to have power to heal sicknesses,

and to cast out devils:

16 And Simon he surnamed Peter;

17 And James the son of Zebedee,

and John the brother of James;

and he surnamed them Boanerges,

which is, The sons of thunder:

18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew,

and Matthew, and Thomas,

and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus,

and Simon the Canaanite*,

19 And Judas Iscariot,

which also betrayed him:

and they went into an house.

Both gospels are consistent.

"Simon the  Canaanite" comes up as the 11th apostle.

*NOTE:

In Catholic school, the nuns taught us that he was Simon, the zealot.

The KJV Bible refers to him as "the Canaanite".

As always, it depends on which Bible version you are using.

Since GOD made me born again nearly 55 months ago, He led me to the King James Version (KJV).

Canaanite seeks JESUS

James 1:6

King James Version

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.

For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea

driven with the wind and tossed.

Not all Canaanites as idolatrous.

Scripture showed there are exceptions.

This blog also aims to reveal that.

The first one we encountered was this woman.

Scripture tells us the story:

Matthew 15:21-27

King James Version

21 Then Jesus went thence,

and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

22 And, behold,

a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts,

and cried unto him, saying,

Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David;

my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

Matthew 15:21-27

King James Version

23 But he answered her not a word.

And his disciples came and besought him, saying,

Send her away; for she crieth after us.

Matthew 15:21-27

King James Version

24 But he answered and said,

I am not sent but unto the lost sheep

of the house of Israel.

Matthew 15:21-27

King James Version

25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying,

Lord, help me.

26 But he answered and said,

It is not meet to take the children's bread,

and to cast it to dogs.

27 And she said, Truth, Lord:

yet the dogs eat of the crumbs

which fall from their masters' table.

Pleased with her answer, JESUS responded:

Matthew 15:28

King James Version

28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her,

O woman, great is thy faith:

be it unto thee even as thou wilt.

And her daughter was made whole

from that very hour.

Mark 7:29-30

King James Version

29 And he said unto her,

For this saying go thy way;

the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

30 And when she was come to her house,

she found the devil gone out,

and her daughter laid upon the bed.

Faith is truly this:

Hebrews 11:1

King James Version

11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,

the evidence of things not seen.

When JESUS returns, He wonders:

Luke 18:8

King James Version

8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.

Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh,

shall he find faith on the earth?

The Canaanite people

Genesis 10:15-18

King James Version

15 And Canaan begat Sidon his first born,

and Heth,

16 And the Jebusite, and the Amorite,

and the Girgasite,

17 And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

18 And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite,

and the Hamathite:

and afterward were the families of the Canaanites

spread abroad.

Canaan is the grandson of Noah.

Canaan's father is Ham, one of the sons of Noah.

This post will feature the sons, and descendants of Canaan.

Canaan's sons:

Sidon (Zidon) -- "father of the Sidonians (Zidonians) and Phoenicians"

Heth -- "ancestor of the Hittites (a Hamitic race)"

Canaan's descendants:

Jebusites -- "At the time of the arrival of the Israelites in Canaan, they were ruled by Adonizedek (Joshua 10:1, 23). They were defeated by Joshua, and their king was slain; but they were not entirely driven out of Jebus till the time of David, who made it the capital of his kingdom instead of Hebron."

Amorite -- "warlike mountaineers. They are represented on the Egyptian monuments with fair skins, light hair, blue eyes, curved or hooked noses, and pointed beards. They are supposed to have been men of great stature; their king, Og, is described by Moses as the last “of the remnant of the giants”

Girgasite -- "a branch of the great family of the Hivites"

Hivite -- "probably a branch of the Hittites"

Arkite -- "descendants from the Phoenicians or Sidonians, the inhabitants of Arka (Erek), 12 miles north of Tripoli, opposite the northern end of Lebanon"

Sinite -- "an inhabitant of Sin, near Arka"

Arvadite

Ezekiel 27:8

King James Version

8 The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad

were thy mariners:

thy wise men, O Tyrus, that were in thee,

were thy pilots.

Zemarite -- one of the Phoenician tribes, who inhabited the town of Sumra, at the western base of the Lebanon range

Hamathite

2 Kings 17:29-30

King James Version

29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own,

and put them in the houses of the high places

which the Samaritans had made,

every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.

30 And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth,

and the men of Cuth made Nergal,

and the men of Hamath made Ashima,

The future of the Canaanites?

Deuteronomy 20:16-17

King James Version

16 But of the cities of these people,

which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance,

thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them;

namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites,

the Canaanites, and the Perizzites,

the Hivites, and the Jebusites;

as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:

But not all will perish.

Not all will be shut out from GOD's house.

If they are like these "exceptions".

The Canaanite gods

Exodus 20:1-3

King James Version

20 And God spake all these words, saying,

2 I am the Lord thy God,

which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt,

out of the house of bondage.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

GOD really makes things plain.

If it was not His most important commandment, He wouldn't have made it first:

Exodus 20:3

King James Version

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

The true born again is careful not to displease GOD.

We obey GOD's commandments.

As one would obey a FATHER.

GOD so hates idolatry.

He didn't want His chosen people marrying Canaanite men, and women, because of their idolatry.

Deuteronomy 7:4

King James Version

4 For they will turn away thy son from following me,

that they may serve other gods:

so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you,

and destroy thee suddenly.

GOD knows the hearts of the Canaanites.

They have many gods.

They will mislead GOD's people.

They will turn away people's hearts from Him.

They will cause them to sin.

If you wish to know the gravity of the situation, check these:

Here's a list of Canaanite gods.

Here's a list of other false gods.

Here's a list of other false deities

Here's a list of idolatrous practices.

Here's a list of idolaters -- people, cities, and nations.

Now we see what GOD has to contend with.

Despite the law being given, man continues to sin.

Our GOD is really longsuffering, merciful, and compassionate.

Despite judgment falling upon us, man keeps sinning.

He has many excuses not to obey the LORD.

But JESUS commanded us:

Matthew 22:37-38

King James Version

37 Jesus said unto him,

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God

with all thy heart,

and with all thy soul,

and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

He also warned us:

Matthew 13:41-43

King James Version

41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels,

and they shall gather out of his kingdom

all things that offend,

and them which do iniquity;

42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire:

there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun

in the kingdom of their Father.

Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

And this is certain:

Revelation 21:8

King James Version

8 But the fearful, and unbelieving,

and the abominable, and murderers,

and whoremongers, and sorcerers,

 and idolaters, and all liars,

shall have their part in the lake

which burneth with fire and brimstone:

which is the second death.

That's why JESUS was sent.

To save us from our sins.

And that we may repent.

And believe His gospel.

While there's still time.

Mark 1:15

King James Version

15 And saying,

The time is fulfilled,

and the kingdom of God is at hand:

repent ye,

and believe the gospel.

Why GOD wants the Canaanites destroyed

Deuteronomy 20:16-17

King James Version

16 But of the cities of these people,

which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance,

thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them;

namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites,

the Canaanites, and the Perizzites,

the Hivites, and the Jebusites;

as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:

Now, we get to the "meat of the matter".

Why GOD wants the Canaanites destroyed.

Why He wants His house "cleared" of them.

SPIRIT and Scripture tell us why:

Deuteronomy 7:3-4

King James Version

3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them;

thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son,

nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

4 For they will turn away thy son from following me,

that they may serve other gods:

so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you,

and destroy thee suddenly.

Deuteronomy 7:5-6

King James Version

5 But thus shall ye deal with them;

ye shall destroy their altars,

and break down their images,

and cut down their groves,

and burn their graven images with fire.

6 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God:

the Lord thy God hath chosen thee

to be a special people unto himself,

above all people

that are upon the face of the earth.

Deuteronomy 7:9-11

King James Version

9 Know therefore

that the Lord thy God,

he is God,

the faithful God,

which keepeth covenant and mercy

with them that love him

and keep his commandments

to a thousand generations;

10 And repayeth them

that hate him to their face,

to destroy them:

he will not be slack to him that hateth him,

he will repay him to his face.

11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments,

and the statutes,

and the judgments,

which I command thee this day,

to do them.

Deuteronomy 7:16

King James Version

16 And thou shalt consume all the people

which the Lord thy God shall deliver thee;

thine eye shall have no pity upon them:

neither shalt thou serve their gods;

 for that will be a snare unto thee.

Deuteronomy 7:25

King James Version

25 The graven images of their gods

shall ye burn with fire:

thou shalt not desire the silver or gold

that is on them,

nor take it unto thee,

lest thou be snared therin:

for it is an abomination

to the Lord thy God.

Deuteronomy 7:26

King James Version

26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination

into thine house,

lest thou be a cursed thing like it:

but thou shalt utterly detest it,

and thou shalt utterly abhor it;

for it is a cursed thing.

GOD hates idolatry.

Remember the LORD's commandments:

Exodus 20:1-2

King James Version

20 And God spake all these words, saying,

2 I am the Lord thy God,

which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt,

out of the house of bondage.

Exodus 20:3-4

King James Version

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image,

or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above,

or that is in the earth beneath,

or that is in the water under the earth.

Exodus 20:5-6

King James Version

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them,

nor serve them:

for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God,

visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children

unto the third and fourth generation

of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them

that love me, and keep my commandments.

Exodus 20:7

King James Version

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain;

for the Lord will not hold him guiltless

that taketh his name in vain.

GOD's war against Canaanites

Deuteronomy 4:39-40

King James Version

39 Know therefore this day,

and consider it in thine heart,

that the Lord he is God in heaven above,

and upon the earth beneath:

there is none else.

40 Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes,

and his commandments,

which I command thee this day,

that it may go well with thee,

and with thy children after thee,

and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth,

which the Lord thy God giveth thee,

for ever.

GOD is always consistent.

He wanted Canaanites wiped out.

If we think that's a terrible thing, let us hear GOD out.

We are treading on HOLY ground here.

We must understand the context.

That is the objective of this blog.

The LORD sent the flood, wiping out all wickedness from earth.

Except for Noah, who had three sons.

One was Ham, who begat Canaan.

Through Canaan, the Canaanites descended.

Through Canaan, the Canaanites were cursed.

It's time we knew what GOD thought of the Canaanites.

And what He wanted His chosen people to do.

Zechariah spoke of GOD's desire in the "day of the Lord":

Zechariah 14:21

King James Version

21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah

shall be holiness unto the Lord of hosts:

and all they that sacrifice

shall come and take of them,

and seethe therein:

and in that day

there shall be no more the Canaanite

in the house of the Lord of hosts.

GOD commanded Moses to do these:

Deuteronomy 7:1-2

King James Version

7 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee

into the land whither thou goest to possess it,

and hath cast out many nations before thee,

the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites

and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites

and the Hivites, and the Jebusites

seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

2 And when the Lord thy God

shall deliver them before thee;

thou shalt smite them,

and utterly destroy them;

thou shalt make no covenant with them,

nor shew mercy unto them:

Deuteronomy 7:3

King James Version

3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them;

 thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son,

nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

Deuteronomy 7:5

King James Version

5 But thus shall ye deal with them;

ye shall destroy their altars,

and break down their images,

and cut down their groves,

and burn their graven images with fire.

Deuteronomy 7:16

King James Version

16 And thou shalt consume all the people

which the Lord thy God shall deliver thee;

thine eye shall have no pity upon them:

neither shalt thou serve their gods;

for that will be a snare unto thee.

Deuteronomy 7:17-19

King James Version

17 If thou shalt say in thine heart,

These nations are more than I;

how can I dispossess them?

18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them:

but shalt well remember what the Lord thy God

did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;

19 The great temptations which thine eyes saw,

and the signs, and the wonders,

and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm,

whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out:

so shall the Lord thy God do unto all the people

of whom thou art afraid.

Deuteronomy 7:20-21

King James Version

20 Moreover the Lord thy God

will send the hornet among them,

until they that are left,

and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.

21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them:

for the Lord thy God is among you,

a mighty God and terrible.

Deuteronomy 7:22-23

King James Version

22 And the Lord thy God will put out those nations

before thee by little and little:

thou mayest not consume them at once,

lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

23 But the Lord thy God shall deliver them unto thee,

and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction,

until they be destroyed.

Deuteronomy 7:24

King James Version

24 And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand,

and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven:

there shall no man be able to stand before thee,

until thou have destroyed them.

Deuteronomy 20:16-17

King James Version

16 But of the cities of these people,

which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance,

thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them;

namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites,

the Canaanites, and the Perizzites,

the Hivites, and the Jebusites;

as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:

Why does GOD want the Canaanites destroyed?

Why doesn't He want them in His house?

Why will they be "cleared" from His house?

We shall find out on the next post.

The cursed Canaan

Acts 24:16

King James Version

16 And herein do I exercise myself,

to have always a conscience void to offence

toward God, and toward men.

Canaan received a curse from his grandfather, Noah.

Why was Canaan cursed, instead of his father, Ham?

Is that why GOD doesn't want any Canaanite in His house?

Has GOD always known how descendants of Ham, and Canaan, would be?

Let's get the context, through these verses:

Genesis 9:20-24

King James Version

20 And Noah began to be an husbandman,

and he planted a vineyard:

21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken;

and he was uncovered within his tent.

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan,

saw the nakedness of his father,

and told his two brethren without.

23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment,

and laid it upon both their shoulders,

and went backward,

and covered the nakedness of their father;

and their faces were backward,

and they saw not their father's nakedness.

24 And Noah awoke from his wine,

and knew what his younger son

had done unto him.

After that incident, Noah cursed Canaan, instead of Ham:

Genesis 9:25-27

King James Version

25 And he said,

Cursed be Canaan;

a servant of servants shall he be

unto his brethren.

26 And he said,

Blessed be the Lord God of Shem;

and Canaan shall be his servant.

27 God shall enlarge Japheth,

and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem;

and Canaan shall be his servant.

Many scholars have come up with reasons why Noah got angry at Ham.

And why Noah cursed his grandson, Canaan, instead.

One notable study was given by Don Stewart:

"Why Was Canaan Cursed Instead of Ham?"

Perhaps, this verse may explain the puzzle:

Numbers 14:18

King James Version

18 The Lord is longsuffering,

and of great mercy,

forgiving iniquity and transgression,

and by no means clearing the guilty,

visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children

unto the third and fourth generation.

That explains Canaan bearing the iniquity of his father, Ham.

And all other generations after him.

And yet, another verse comes to mind:

Ezekiel 18:20

King James Version

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die.

The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father,

neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son:

the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him,

and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Following that route, we gather that Noah (the father) shall not "bear the iniquity of the son" (Ham).

It also says "The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father".

Why did Canaan bear his father's "iniquity"?

Perhaps, these verses will explain GOD's decision, through Noah:

Isaiah 46:10

King James Version

10 Declaring the end from the beginning,

and from ancient times

the things that are not yet done,

saying,

My counsel shall stand,

and I will do all my pleasure:

GOD is all-knowing.

He knows the "end from the beginning".

He knows the "things that are not yet done".

All our hearts are transparent before GOD.

All our souls belong to GOD.

Ezekiel 18:4

King James Version

4 Behold,

all souls are mine;

as the soul of the father,

so also the soul of the son is mine:

the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

As born again, I trust the will, ways, and wisdom of GOD.

Isaiah 55:8-9

King James Version

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways,

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Through that curse, the Canaanites were destined to be destroyed.

GOD declared war upon them.

What did He command Moses to do?

What did He instruct Zechariah to say?

An amazing set of verses tell us more.
